2017 Audi S3 Stage 2 – Haldex AWD Failure & Engine Misfire Diagnosis

Audi S3 Haldex pump inspection

This 2017 Audi S3 (8V) with Stage 2 performance upgrades recently visited Kreskas Automotive in Croydon South with concerns relating to its Haldex all-wheel-drive system and an engine misfire. During our investigation, we discovered a significant buildup of sludge around the Haldex pump's intake strainer, restricting oil flow and preventing the system from operating correctly.

AWD pressure loss and engine misfire diagnosis

When the Haldex pump cannot generate sufficient hydraulic pressure, the rear wheels may fail to engage, effectively leaving the vehicle operating in front-wheel drive. This can result in excessive front wheelspin, reduced traction and additional strain on drivetrain components, particularly in modified vehicles producing increased power and torque. Further diagnostics also revealed that the spark plug electrode tips had suffered substantial wear, contributing to the engine misfire.

Maintenance for modified Audi S3 vehicles

Stage 2 tuned vehicles generally require more frequent spark plug inspections and replacements than standard vehicles, as increased boost pressure and higher combustion temperatures place greater demands on the ignition system. Worn spark plugs can cause hesitation, rough running, reduced performance and misfires under acceleration. This Audi S3 highlights the importance of preventative maintenance for modified European performance vehicles, including regular Haldex servicing, pump strainer cleaning and appropriately scheduled spark plug replacement. At Kreskas Automotive, we specialise in Audi S3 servicing, Haldex repairs, engine diagnostics and performance vehicle maintenance, proudly assisting customers throughout Croydon, Ringwood, Bayswater, Kilsyth, Mooroolbark and Melbourne's eastern suburbs.
