2017 BMW 340i B58 – PCV Diaphragm Failure, Exhaust Smoke & High-Pitched Engine Noise
BMW B58 smoke and whistle diagnosis
This 2017 BMW 340i (F30), powered by BMW's renowned B58 turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine, recently visited Kreskas Automotive in Croydon South with excessive smoke coming from the exhaust and an unusual high-pitched whistling noise from the engine bay. Following a thorough inspection and diagnostic investigation, we traced both symptoms to a split Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) diaphragm, a known issue affecting the BMW B58 engine. The PCV system is responsible for regulating crankcase pressure and safely recycling engine blow-by gases through the intake system.
PCV diaphragm failure and targeted repair
When the rubber diaphragm splits, it can create an excessive vacuum and allow engine oil to enter the intake and combustion chambers, resulting in visible exhaust smoke, increased oil consumption, rough idling and a distinctive whistling or squealing noise. These symptoms can often be mistaken for more serious and expensive problems, including turbocharger or internal engine failure. Fortunately, replacement PCV diaphragm repair kits are available for the B58 engine, meaning that when the surrounding valve cover assembly remains serviceable, the failed diaphragm can be replaced independently rather than replacing the entire valve cover. This provides a significantly more cost-effective repair while addressing the underlying fault. This BMW 340i is another example of why accurate diagnostics are essential before replacing expensive components.
