Logbook service vs. oil change. what's the difference?
At Kreskas Automotive, we often get asked about the difference between a logbook service and a simple oil service. While both are important for maintaining your vehicle, they serve very different purposes. Understanding the difference can help you make the right decision for your car’s ongoing care.

What Is a Logbook Service?
A logbook service is a comprehensive service carried out according to your vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. Every car manufacturer sets out a schedule of inspections, adjustments, and replacements that must be completed at certain intervals (e.g., 10,000 km, 20,000 km, etc.). This ensures your car continues to operate as intended and that your new car warranty remains valid.

During a logbook service, we will:
-
Replace engine oil and filter with the correct grade and specification.
-
Inspect and top up all fluids (coolant, brake, transmission, etc.).
-
Check brakes, steering, suspension, and driveline components.
-
Perform diagnostic scans and reset service reminders.
-
Inspect belts, hoses, lights, and tyres for wear or damage.
-
Stamp and update your service logbook.

In short, a logbook service is a manufacturer-prescribed health check and maintenance plan for your vehicle.

What Is an Oil Service?
An oil service is a more basic level of maintenance that focuses on engine lubrication. It’s designed to keep your engine running smoothly between major services, particularly if you drive under heavy conditions (towing, city traffic, short trips, or high performance use).

An oil service generally includes:
-
Draining and replacing the engine oil.
-
Fitting a new oil filter.
-
Checking and topping up basic fluids.
-
A quick visual inspection of the vehicle.

This service helps prevent premature engine wear by ensuring fresh, clean oil is circulating through your engine at all times.

Which One Do You Need?
If your car is due according to the manufacturer’s schedule, a logbook service is required to keep your vehicle in warranty and ensure all systems are inspected.
If you want to look after your engine between services (especially if you drive hard or cover high mileage), an oil service is a great preventative option.
At Kreskas Automotive, we offer both services, tailored to your car and driving style. Whether you’re keeping your warranty up to date or simply giving your engine extra protection, we’ll ensure your vehicle gets the attention it needs.
