2009 Mercedes-Benz CLK350 – Thermostat Failure & Engine Oil Cooler Gasket Repair
This well-maintained 2009 Mercedes-Benz CLK350 (W209) recently visited Kreskas Automotive in Croydon South after the owner noticed an engine warning message on the dashboard. Following a comprehensive diagnostic investigation, our technicians identified that the engine was failing to reach its intended operating temperature within the expected timeframe. Further inspection revealed a thermostat stuck in the open position, preventing the cooling system from regulating engine temperature correctly. During our investigation, we also discovered engine oil contamination within the cooling system, indicating an additional mechanical fault requiring attention.

A thermostat that remains open allows coolant to circulate continuously through the radiator, potentially preventing the engine from reaching its optimal operating temperature. This can result in reduced fuel efficiency, increased engine wear and an illuminated engine warning light. We replaced the faulty thermostat to restore correct engine temperature regulation. Further investigation into the oil contamination identified a failed engine oil cooler gasket, allowing engine oil to enter the cooling system. This type of failure requires particular attention, as oil contamination can compromise cooling system performance, deteriorate rubber components and potentially lead to more expensive repairs if left unresolved.
